"Xbox" means two different releases for Dumpster Gang, and mixing them up is the most common mistake on this game.
- Xbox on PC launches December 3, 2026, through the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app.
- Xbox Series X|S launches March 2027, alongside the PS5 and Switch 2 versions.
Both are on Game Pass on their own first day. That is two subscription launches, three months apart, on two different devices.
Which one you are buying
| Where you play | Date | Game Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC, Xbox app | December 3, 2026 | Included at launch |
| Xbox Series X|S | March 2027 | Included at launch |
If you own a gaming PC and an Xbox console, you can be playing in December and again on the console in March, and the two are separate installs. Whether a single subscription tier covers both is a plan question, not a game question: check the tier on the Xbox app on the day rather than trusting a tier name that may have changed.

What is missing from the Xbox list
- No Xbox One version. Only Series X|S is named. The 2013-generation console is not supported.
- No Xbox 360 or backward-compatible route. There is nothing to play on older hardware.
- No announced Play Anywhere entitlement. Microsoft's cross-buy scheme has not been mentioned for this title, so a purchase on the Microsoft Store should not be assumed to include the console version.
- No cross-save announcement. Progress moving between the PC build and the console build has not been described.
The PC build through the Xbox app
The Microsoft Store version is the same Windows build Steam sells, distributed through the Xbox app. In practice that means:
- Install and launch from the Xbox app rather than Steam.
- Achievements land in the Xbox ecosystem instead of Steam.
- The demo is listed separately, so both entries can sit in the library at once.
- Controller support is the same full support the Steam listing advertises.
Anyone with PC Game Pass can install it on day one without paying for the game itself, which makes the Xbox app the cheapest way to play in December if the subscription already exists.
The console version in March
The Series X|S release shares its window with PS5 and Switch 2. Curve Games announced all three at once, with no exact day inside March 2027. Xbox is the only one of the three confirmed for Game Pass on its launch day.
What the console version will and will not do is still open. Frame rate targets, whether four-player online co-op is identical to the PC build, and whether crossplay reaches PC players have all gone unannounced. A co-op game lives or dies on that last one, and it is the question worth asking again in February.
Which subscription, and what to check
Two things are easy to get wrong when subscribing for this game.
The PC version needs a PC plan. Game Pass on console and Game Pass on PC are sold as separate entitlements, with a combined tier above both. A console-only subscriber cannot install the Windows build in December.
The console version arrives with its own launch. The Series X|S release in March 2027 is confirmed for Game Pass on day one, but that is a separate moment. Being subscribed in December does not pre-load anything for March.
On the day, the Xbox app listing is the only reliable check: it shows whether the game is included in the tier you actually hold, and it updates faster than any announcement.
Practical advice for Xbox players
In December: if you have a PC, play the demo through the Xbox app. It is the same three areas as the Steam demo and it costs nothing. This is also the only way to see the game before March.
In January and February: expect a lot of PC launch coverage that does not apply to you. Balance changes, hat unlocks and patch notes will all describe a version you cannot play yet.
In March: the console version arrives with Game Pass on day one. Because three months of patches will already have landed, the version you install is not the version that was reviewed in December.
Not the same product
A Microsoft Store purchase, a Steam purchase and a Game Pass subscription are three separate routes to the same game. Only the subscription is confirmed to include the December launch without a purchase.
For anyone planning to play on both a Windows PC and a Series X|S, the two installs and the two achievement lists are separate, and nothing announced makes one account's progress appear on the other device.
Worth checking before you commit: whether the console version's Game Pass inclusion is a permanent addition to the library or a limited window. That detail has not been announced, and it decides whether a subscription is a rental or a substitute for buying.
On the console side there is one more unknown worth naming: whether the Series X|S build offers a performance mode, a quality mode or neither. No graphics options have been described for any console version, and a four-player physics game benefits from a frame rate option more than from resolution.
